Meade croppedGrant has not yet returned from Washington. It is reported he has gone to Harper’s Ferry to see for himself how matters stand. This, and his not telegraphing for me, I think settle the question about my being transferred.

Meade’s correspondence taken from The Life and Letters of George Gordon Meade, Major-General United States Army, Vol. 2, (New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1913), p. 219. Available via Google Books.
